PHOTO TBC — photographer on a stepladder, reaching for a ceiling hook · shot from below Every backdrop change means a ladder, a stretch, and a broken shoot.
You've invested in good lights, the right lenses, and a studio that actually works. Then every backdrop change pulls the same old ritual: drag the ladder over. Climb. Balance. Unhook. Climb back down. Walk the backdrop. Climb up again. Hook it. Climb down. Reset the light. Talk the subject back into the mood.
Five to ten minutes, every time. Done alone, it is physically awkward and genuinely unsafe. Done with an assistant, it costs you another hourly rate. Done in front of a paying client, it cracks the quiet confidence the shoot depends on.
There has never been a better solution. Only higher ladders.
Three steps. No ladders.
STEP 1 LOOP — install / mount unit Attach once
One 2-hour installation mounts Backdrop Lift to your ceiling or wall. Done once, works for a decade.
STEP 2 LOOP — hand on remote, backdrop lowering Press to lower
Hold the remote. The motor lowers the backdrop smoothly to working height — fabric, paper, vinyl, velvet, whatever you're using.
STEP 3 LOOP — shooting, no ladder in frame Shoot, change, repeat
The backdrop changes in seconds. You never leave the floor. Your client never sees a ladder.
A thousand shoots. Never a ladder.
Reference images — real studio photography of installed units is in production.
The same studio, running differently.
We do not compare Backdrop Lift to other products. There aren't any. We compare it to what every studio does today.
The benefit nobody talks about — until somebody falls.
No ladders. No reaching overhead with a weight in one hand.
No assistants needed for large backdrops, which means no one else at risk either.
A motorized system your insurance can read on a spec sheet — not an ad-hoc ladder setup.

Ten years in our own studios before we sold a single one.
We have run the Digifoto photo studios since 2009. We have used backdrop lifts in them for over ten years, through thousands of studio rentals, hundreds of backdrop changes on every single lift, and the hands of seasoned professionals and complete beginners alike.
That daily operation taught us something the spec sheets never mention: a lot of photographers don’t want to climb a stepladder — and often can’t. Not everyone is steady at height. A roll of backdrop is hard to carry in one hand while holding on with the other. And a stepladder has a load limit that is easy to exceed with a heavy roll in your arms. So the backdrop change becomes the slow, uncomfortable part of the job that most people put off.
That is why Backdrop Lift exists, and why it keeps improving. We replaced cables with straps, adapted the hook shape for the crossbar spindles, tuned the end-stops — every change came from a real note from the studio floor. The original units have been running here for over ten years; the ones we sell today are their improved version.
We are not selling a theoretical product. We are offering a solution proven over years in our own studios.
Not hundreds of reviews. Thousands of shoots.
Collected from photographers who work with Backdrop Lift in our Prague studios, up to June 2026. Published with their consent, in their own words.
The biggest benefit of Backdrop Lift is how much easier and faster it is to install and change a photographic backdrop without needing a second person. Not having to climb, hunt for a ladder or a chair, and being able to set the backdrop from the comfort of the floor is a level of comfort both professionals and hobbyists can appreciate — and not only in photography. At the same time, the model or the client attending the shoot doesn’t have to watch the awkward backdrop change that studio work otherwise involves.
A studio shoot involves a lot of small tasks that eat up time. Choosing the backdrop and bringing it down is one of them. Backdrop Lift is a significant help — it cuts the handling to a minimum and lets me concentrate on working with the model. I deliberately choose studios that have Backdrop Lift over ones that don’t. It saves me time and makes a real difference in getting everything shot that I need.
The backdrop lift makes every shoot easier. I can’t imagine balancing on a stepladder with a heavy roll any more. It’s the best studio gadget there is. Shooting with a motorised backdrop looks professional, and plenty of my clients ask with genuine interest where they could get one. I really appreciate how fast and simple the backdrop change is — I can go through several of them in a single shoot, and my clients appreciate that later when they’re choosing their photos. If I were fitting out a studio, the backdrop lift would be the most practical, most used item and an absolute must-have. So — thank you for it!
Thanks to the lift I don’t have to climb to the very top of a stepladder and wrestle with the backdrop (which normally takes an assistant). I just lower it, calmly swap it on my own, and the client doesn’t have to watch me struggling up in the air.
Today I can’t imagine handling backdrops any other way than with a motorised lift. Changing the backdrop has become quick and simple, and it saves a lot of time. To a client who used to watch the manual backdrop change, a studio with a motorised lift looks far more professional — never mind the fact that I often had to rope that client in to help with the manual change.
I like the remote-controlled backdrop system far more than the classic one, because changing the backdrop is physically easier for me. During a shoot of roughly one to two hours I can change it once or twice, and it saves me both energy and time.
I don’t usually mount the backdrop myself, but when we’re shooting a project, being able to quickly change the backdrop colour — or just roll it down at the press of a button — saves time and speeds up the whole process. And nobody has to climb a ladder to do it.
I’ll admit this was my first time working with a backdrop at the Digifoto studio in Prague (I had never changed a backdrop roll on a stand before), so I was learning as I went and the experience is fresh. For an amateur like me the lift is a huge help and I think I’ll use it more often. On top of that I’m afraid of heights, so otherwise I wouldn’t even dare to change a backdrop.
Will it fit your studio?

Questions, answered.
Backdrop Lift mounts to load-bearing ceilings and walls — concrete, solid masonry, or structural wood. Minimum ceiling height is 2.8 meters, maximum 6 meters: the straps travel 4.5 m, so even from a 6 m ceiling the backdrop lowers to a height you can comfortably work with from the ground. If your ceiling is lower, higher, hollow, or you're unsure — email us with a photo and we'll confirm compatibility within 24 hours.
Two hours for a handy person with a drill, a level, and a second pair of hands for lifting. We provide a step-by-step guide and recommend professional installation — anchoring into your specific ceiling is the one step worth doing right. We can refer a local partner in most major cities.
Any backdrop that hangs from the crossbar: paper rolls (48–57 mm core), seamless, fabric, vinyl, printed, painted canvas. Maximum width and weight are listed in the specifications above.
During a shoot the system is completely silent — the motor only runs while the backdrop is being raised or lowered, which takes seconds between setups, never during a shot. A measured noise figure for the motor itself will be published in the specifications.
No. Using the remote you program an upper and a lower end position, and the lift stops there automatically every time — the backdrop parks at exactly the height you set instead of running to the ceiling.
The motor is serviceable. Replacement parts are stocked for at least 10 years from your purchase date. The units in our reference studios have been running for a decade — that's not marketing, that's the actual data.
Yes. If you buy as an EU consumer, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal under EU law — no justification needed. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer; it's a 25 kg freight parcel, so contact us first and we'll advise the best way to send it. Separately from returns, the 5-year warranty covers motor and electronics, and a unit that arrives faulty or fails to function as specified is refunded or replaced. Full conditions are on the Returns page.

Yes. Commercial and rental studios are a core use case. Contact us if you're outfitting multiple rooms — we offer volume guidance and installation coordination.
Very little. Inspect the straps and hooks periodically — the manual shows what to check. If a strap, frame, or remote shows damage, stop using the lift and contact us.
A winch pulls a cable. Backdrop Lift is a controlled motorized system designed for studio backdrops specifically — smooth start, smooth stop, safe load tolerances, and a remote. A winch is a hardware-store solution that will damage a $400 paper roll the first time you use it quickly.
